Failure is Always the Best Way to Learn, 2024
Watercolour and ink on paper
23"x30"
The work's title is a lyric from the song Failure by Kings of Convenience. It is featured on their album Quiet is the New Loud, which I find soothing. This artwork combines depictions of things I find comforting: my pets, tea, willow trees, slippers, a comfy sweater, and the discomfort represented by the contortion of the body. My interpretation of 'Celebrating Home' is about recognizing my experience and complexities with what I enjoy the most. As a person living with OCD, I can find myself overwhelmingly distressed by intrusive thoughts in a way that can lead to the avoidance of the very things that bring me joy. Sometimes, I am moving through my most beautiful life moments with a certain amount of discomfort because of that. This work hopes to honour both aspects of my experience and to exist with the discomfort, not despite it.

This work was prompted by a compilation of quotes and songs. It was a fun challenge to use words, moods, and emotions to create a visual image.
